The Addams Family House in Westfield, NJ | Things to do in NYC in the Fall 2021

Visit the home of the “creepy, kooky, mysterious, spooky, altogether ooky”, or the Addams Family. The Addams Family originated in Westfield, New Jersey – or rather their creator Charles Addams was born and grew up.  The house on Elm Street, that the author was passing every day on his way to school, is said to be the inspiration for the famous “Addams Family house”. As well as the Presbyterian Cemetery on Mountain Avenue.

There is a yearly festival, celebrating Charles Addams’ legacy, throughout the month of October. Residents go all out to bring his creations to life through AddamsFest. Must-sees include themed jack-o’-lanterns, a 13-foot replica of the TV family’s home floating on a lake, and exhibits of Addams’s work, including a life-size skeleton he drew on a barn wall as a teen. You can find the whole list of the events for the  Addams Festival Here.

Get inspired at the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze.

If you are really into the carved pumpkins, there are 7,000 of them at the magical Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze.  There are two locations this year: Croton-on-Hudson and at Old Bethpage on Long Island.

This yearly Halloween experience features more than 7,000 hand-carved, illuminated pumpkin – lanterns. Amongst all the things to do in NYC in the Fall this one is the most lit. The pumpkins are turned into many impressive displays, with lighting and music enhancements. See the pumpkin carousel, windmill, and just about anything you can think of. Plus the new addition for this year – the New York City skyline.

All admission is by timed-entry ticket only, and tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets may be purchased online or by phone. There will be no tickets on the site.

This year’s Blaze is offered nightly starting September 17 and on select nights from November 1-21.

Visit New York Botanical Garden in the fall.

If you haven’t done so yet, don’t walk – run to see the ‘Kusama: Cosmic Nature’ (ends October 31). For those who already have visited, consider a revisit, as you will get to see those magical exhibits in a different light and colors. You can book directly online via the link provided and input KUSAMA20 in the promotional code section, for the 20% off.

Plus, traditionally, NYBG gets beautifully decorated with jumbo pumpkins – a must see.

Staten Island Ferry

Staten Island Ferry

Best things in life are free. So is the Staten Island Ferry. Amongst our most favorite things to do in NYC in the Fall, the Ferry is the easiest to accomodate. It is free and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The 25-minute ride gives you incredible views of New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty, and Manhattan’s glittering skyline. They also serve beer on board, which makes it feel more like a cruise, and less like a public transportation.

Cost: Free
